St. John’s Co-sponsors Symposium on the US and East Asia
A two-day symposium, Living in Challenging Times: The United States & East Asia, will be held at St. John’s College, Santa Fe, April 8 & 9. The symposium is presented by the Santa Fe World Affairs Forum and co-sponsored by St. John’s College; the University of New Mexico Center for Science, Technology and Policy; the Albuquerque Committee on Foreign Relations; the American Foreign Service Association; and the Public Diplomacy Council.
On the first day of the symposium, Ambassador Will Itoh will present “Overview of U.S.-Asia Relations.” Itoh is a specialist on East Asia, an Aspen Institute presenter, and a former U.S. Ambassador to Thailand. Dr. Chris Nelson, vice president of Samuels International in Washington, DC, will present “North Asia and the Korea Conundrum.” The day will conclude with a cocktail reception for speakers and symposium participants.
On the second day of the symposium, scheduled lectures are “China as a Rising Power in Search of its Rightful Place,” presented by Dr. Suisheng Zhao, director of the Center for US-China Cooperation at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, and “Is the Myanmar Exuberance Irrational—and whatever happened to Vietnam?” by Frances Zwenig, president of the US-ASEAN Business Council Institute, Inc. There will also be a talk on the Chinese military and a concluding panel. The day also includes a buffet luncheon.
All St. John’s students, staff, and faculty are welcome to attend the lectures free of charge, though must register as participants if they wish to attend the cocktail reception and luncheon.
The cost for both days is $70/members of Santa Fe World Affairs Forum; $85/non-members; $30 students. Cost for April 8 only is $40; April 9 only is $50. Please note on your check that payment is for the April 2013 symposium. Your payment guarantees you a place, but it is non-refundable after Wednesday, April 4, if you are unable to attend.
