Annapolis - Volunteer Opportunities
ORGANIZATIONS WITH WHICH ST. JOHN'S STUDENTS
MOST FREQUENTLY VOLUNTEER
The Light House Shelter is located at 10 Hudson Street in Annapolis. For over two decades the shelter has been steadfast in helping to rebuild lives with service and compassion by providing shelter, preventing homelessness and empowering people in Anne Arundel County as they work to become self-sufficient.
The shelter has a variety of volunteer opportunities available, including meal preparation/distribution for guests. This a great opportunity for small groups as well as individuals!
The Stanton Community Center is located at 92 West Washington Street in Annapolis. The Stanton Community Center is a community resource for children and adults. Community organization offices are located in this building and provide children and adults with recreational and cultural enrichment opportunities and health, medical, therapeutic, and counseling services.
The center features many offices, multi-purpose gymnasium, a commercial kitchen, fitness area, historic classroom, media center with computers, and two conference/meeting rooms. Volunteer opportunities abound, but there is a history of St. John's students volunteering at the center to work with local young people after school.
Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity International brings families and communities in need together with volunteers and resources to build decent, affordable houses.
Habitat for Humanity of Anne Arundel County builds houses locally in Annapolis, as well as at other locations around Anne Arundel County. There will be new building projects starting on Clay Street in the spring of 2009. The organization also regularly has construction ongoing within driving distance of the college. Volunteer opportunities are available for individuals as well as for groups.
Chesapeake Bay Foundation
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) works cooperatively with government, business, and citizens in partnerships to protect and restore the Bay. CBF also fights for strong and effective laws and regulations to protect the Chesapeake Bay. The CBF headquarters is a ten minute drive from St. John's Campus, but events are often held at a variety of locations around town as well in the surrounding area.
CBF has a variety of volunteer opportunities both, hands-on field work and office-based. Some opportunities require a longer term commitment, while others are one day events.
Anne Arundel Medical Center
Anne Arundel Medical Center is the closest hospital to the college. The hospital is affiliated with Johns Hopkins and regularly has needs for a variety of volunteers.
Volunteer opportunities include: working in a variety of patient care areas, meeting and greeting the public, office work, and fundraising.
