About the Dormitories

All freshman students are required to live on campus. This helps to create a sense of community among those attending the college and helps new students to adjust better to college life. About 80% of undergraduate students at the college live in one of the dormitories.

The majority of dorms are co-ed, usually by floor. There are no co-ed bathrooms. All dorms are non-smoking, as New Mexico state law prohibits smoking in most workplaces.

There are nineteen dorms with fourteen to eighteen students per dorm. These dorms are located in two areas of campus. The first group of dorms, located east and uphill from the campus, are Meem, Driscoll, Murchison, Kirby, Huffman, Anderson, McCune, Wagner and Jones. The second group of dorms, located west and downhill from the campus, are Calliope, Clio, Euterpe, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia, Urania, Ferdinand, Ariel and Miranda.

Because there are a limited number of single rooms, freshmen typically have one roommate.

The dorm rooms are open to incoming students at 9:00 a.m. for occupancy the day of registration. Heavy luggage or packages can be delivered up to one week before registration day. Ship such packages to the following address:

What's in the Dormitory Rooms?
Furniture for each student includes:

  • a telephone mounted on the wall with an Ethernet connection
  • a hard-wired smoke detector with battery back-up mounted on wall
  • a student desk with desk lamp attached
  • a desk chair
  • a bookcase mounted on wall
  • a wastepaper basket
  • a built-in closet
  • a mirrored medicine chest with light
  • a towel rack or hooks
  • an extra-long twin bed unit consisting of a frame, a box spring, and a mattress

(If you'd like curtains, it's best to wait until you see your room, since windows are not standard sizes.)

What to bring?
Dorm rooms have basic furniture. You may wish to bring:

  • Linens (extra-long twin-sized mattress cover, sheets, blanket(s), pillow(s), pillow case(s), towels, and washcloths)
  • Comforter or bed spread
  • Throw rugs for your room; the floors are tile and can be chilly in the winter
  • Alarm clock
  • Personal or laptop computer
  • Headphones, for use with a computer or stereo
  • Coffee cups and drinking glasses
  • Warm slippers and bathrobe
  • Boots and/or shoes suitable for steep country and snow
  • Warm layers for winter and early spring

Microwaves, space heaters and air conditioners are not permitted. Open heating elements such as hot plates, are not allowed. Other items not allowed are: candles, incense, weapons and self-defense devices such as stun guns. Smoking is prohibited by state law inside all campus buildings, including the dormitories.

There are three laundry rooms, one in each dorm complex.

In general, less is more. Wait and see what you need. You will have the opportunity to get it once you are here. At the beginning of the school year, the college runs shuttles to all the major shopping areas in Santa Fe.

Computer Information for Incoming Freshmen
Information Technology Services (ITS) supports the College’s mission and strategic directions by providing information technology services and support. Our goal is to provide you information on computer standards, the campus student lab and network access as well as how to obtain your network account. Network Connections
All dorms at St. John’s College are wired for access to the Internet and the campus network. In addition, wireless network access is available in a number of common spaces throughout the campus. You will need a Network Account (see below) to access the network. If needed, a network cable can be purchased at the campus bookstore.

Network Account
All currently enrolled students are provided with a “Network Account” that is used to access campus computers, the campus network, college-provided personal e-mail, and disk space. Acceptance of an account signifies that the student has read and agrees to comply with the college acceptable use policy. Wireless network access is available in common spaces around campus for use with laptop computers, and all residential rooms are wired for access to the Internet and the campus network

The Student Computer Center (SCC)
The Student Computer Center (SCC) is located in room 18 on the basement level of the Evans Science Lab; it is equipped with Windows and Macintosh computers, laser printers and a scanner. The center provides access to Microsoft Office and other applications, as well as to e-mail and the Web. The SCC is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the academic year.

Computer Configuration Standards
The information below outlines the current minimum recommendations for Windows-based and Macintosh computers for use by students at St. John’s College. In order to participate in the college network, and obtain ITS support services, your computer must meet or exceed these recommendations:
Mac with Tiger OS 10.4 and above
PC with Windows XP and above
Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware: Required

Student Email Accounts
Each student is provided with an email account and personal folder on the student servers. Account information will be provided during Freshman registration. You will be able to use Outlook Web Access to access your mail, from any Internet-accessible computer anywhere in the world. Instructions, rules and guidelines will be provided to you during the registration process.

Vehicle Registration and Parking Permits
All students parking their motor vehicles, motorcycles, or mopeds on campus must register and obtain a parking sticker. Campers, trailers, motor homes, commercial size trucks, and inoperable vehicles may not be parked on campus. St. John’s College is not responsible for damage to vehicles on campus or theft of their contents. The undergraduate vehicle registration fee is $100.

Downtown Santa Fe is less than three miles from campus and there are many shopping areas close by. The College sometimes provides a shuttle service to local malls and shopping centers.

The Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) is the closest major airport to Santa Fe. The following airlines currently land at ABQ: American, Continental, Delta, Frontier, Southwest, United and US Airways.
The New Mexico Rail Runner train offers free shuttle service between the Sunport and its Albuquerque depot. Tickets then need to be purchased from Albuquerque to the Santa Fe Railyard stop; transportation from the Santa Fe station stop to campus must be arranged. (Available options are city bus or taxi.) Food
Regular meals are served cafeteria-style in the Dining Hall. A variety of foods is offered at every meal, including vegetarian and vegan options. Sandwiches and snacks are available in the Coffee Shop. Both facilities are located in Peterson Student Center. Two different meal plans are available. Under the first plan students can eat up to twenty meals per week in the Dining Hall; the second plan provides for fourteen meals per week.
Food Service will make every effort to meet the special dietary needs of residential students with chronic medical conditions if diets are prescribed by an M.D. or D.O. These special diets should be outlined in detail and submitted to the Office of Residential Life by the student’s physician no later than July 1 for the fall semester or December 1 for the spring semester.

Health Services
The Student Health and Wellness Office (SHO), at ext. 6418, located in the northwest corner of the lower dormitory complex, is open Monday through Friday with evening clinic hours on Wednesdays. See the web page http://www.stjohnscollege.edu/admin/SF/health.shtml, the SHO, the Assistant Dean’s Office or Switchboard for hours.

Primary health care in the Student Health and Wellness Office is provided by a Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP), and is free of charge to currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate institute students, provided that the required student health history and physical examination forms have been completed and are on file in the office.

The CNP at the SHO provides a variety of services to the students. These services include:

  • Evaluation and treatment of minor acute illnesses and injuries
  • Monitoring of stable chronic illnesses
  • Women’s health care, i.e., annual exams, family planning
  • Physical exams for men and women
  • Evaluation and treatment for certain mental health issues
  • Laboratory tests, i.e., blood draws, urine tests, strep, mono, and pregnancy tests
  • Prescriptions for medications, including refills for ADHD medications with appropriate documentation from the original prescriber

Referrals to local health care providers and services for consultation and/or treatment when required

Buying Books and Supplies
The Campus Bookstore stocks all books required for St. John's classes. Several translations and/or editions are available of most books on the reading list, and the Bookstore keeps a compilation of book advice/opinions/comparisons by St. John's tutors. In addition, several of the staff are either St. John's graduates or current students and will happily offer you their personal views.

Should you buy all your texts at the start of the year? No! Buying your books involves making choices you aren't yet equipped to make. Your tutors may have preferences, and you're going to hear lots of opinions from upper-class students. You will also develop your own tastes. The basic things you need to start are: the Greek manual, Euclid's Elements, the freshman Lab Manual, the freshman music manual, and a copy of Homer's Iliad.
The Bookstore accepts personal checks and VISA, MasterCard, Discover or American Express credit cards. Naturally, cash is also welcome.

What the Bookstore stocks: program books, lots of fiction, poetry, reference, history, sciences, philosophy, books to help you learn Greek or math, biographies of philosophers, books on writing, drama, art books, and music (scores and libretti).

Special orders are taken at no extra charge. There is also a supply of sweatshirts, T-shirts, baseball caps, and other SJC paraphernalia. The Bookstore carries school supplies like pads, pens, binders, and pencils, and even laundry detergent and some basic toiletries. The Bookstore phone number is 505.984.6056.

Banking
A Wells Fargo Bank ATM is located in the Peterson Student Center for the college community’s use.

Wells Fargo Bank will cash personal checks of up to $500 per month for St. John’s College students who present a current college ID card and one other means of identification to a customer service representative who must approve the checks before they may be presented to a teller. If this service is used for more than one check per month, or for checks greater than $500, prior approval must be obtained from the college treasurer.
